HUNGER ISSUES IN THE COMMUNITY

In October of 2015 SALUD began collaboration with AmeriCorps Vista volunteers and the Hunger-Free Iowa Initiative. From this collaborative effort the HUNGER DIALOGUES were launched—monthly gatherings providing an inclusive platform for open communications about food issues in the community.

Together, we learn more about the face of hunger from local experts and discuss community strengths and challenges.  Together, community members decide community priorities and brainstorm action steps to address those needs.

Here are some of the ways Storm Lake is addressing food insecurity:

• Abundant Harvest: Distribution of Donated Garden Produce

• Eden Gardens:  A ‘U-Help, U-Pick’ Garden

• Friends With Food: Monthly Food Distribution for the Homebound

• Kiwanis Mobile Food Pantry: Monthly Food Distribution

• Storm Lake School Food Pantry 

• Upper Des Moines Food Pantry.
